Where do I mount the Dickinson Newport heater? - The Dickinson Newport is a wall mounted cabin heater. It is ideal to be mounted on a bulkhead and provide radiant heat into the cabin space.
- The flue arrangement is pretty simple, 3" flue pipe is fitted to the top of the heater and then run vertically up to the roof (some bends can be put in the pipe, but this needs to be discussed as it will detract from the performance of the heater). The flue then fits into a deck fitting arrangement, then a choice of cowl is used on the outside of the boat - we can offer advice on this if you are unsure about any aspect of it.
- The heater should be mounted on heatproof board and the flue also kept away from any combustible materials.
What fitment parts do I need to go with it? It is probably best to discuss your fitment requirements with us, then we can ensure you are purchasing the right parts to go with the heater - The heat output of the Dickinson is controlled by the air vent on the front of the heater and ash pan. However it is best to fit a flue damper (butterfly valve) in the flue, this can be used to restrict the flue gasses escaping and hence allows greater control of the output. This is simply fitted into the 3" flue pipe a small distance above the heater.
- The heater needs a minimum flue length therefore you will normally need one to two 22" lengths of flue pipe (quite often cut down to one and a half) going up to the deck fitting.
- The hot flue pipe can be protected with a guard to prevent people from grabbing it as a convenient yet painful handhold on an unsteady boat.
- The deck fitting is fitted on the roof, and a dress ring is fitted on the inside to cover the hole in the roof lining.
- A rain cap is advised to cover the fkue outlet when a cowl isnt fitted.
- A choice of cowl is then available for the outside. Please see pictures below.
1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) - H-Cowl (this is the best in windy conditions but isnt aesthetically pleasing and is good at snagging ropes)
- Clover Leaf Cowl (this is nearly as good as the H-cowl in windy conditions and is less cumbersome)
- DP Cowl (this is the basic outlet, best for avoiding snagging ropes etc, but not so good in very windy conditions)
- Flue guard (22" length)
- Rain cap (this sits on the outside of the deck fitting when your cowl isnt fitted and the heater is OFF
- Deck fitting and dress ring
- Cast Iron flue damper
