Splitter diodes

What is a split charge diode and what does it do?

A sterling splitter diode is fitted in-line between a power source (charging) and batteries to be charged. Its a simple unit (please see picture) with stud terminals where the appropriate connections are attached (power connections in and connections out). A split charge diode does the following:

  • Blocks a reverse current going between the battery and power source
  • Block a current from flowing between batteries connected through the splitter diode
  • Allows the power source to charge the batteries independantly (allows the power source to charge a flat battery when the others connected to the splitter diode may be full).

How big a splitter diode will i need?

The sterling split charge diode needs to be rated to the size power source (charging) you are going to connect up to it. For example no larger than a 70A alternator should be connected to a 70A splitter diode. The various models of splitter diode will have differing numbers of connections for batteries (usually two or three), each battery connection can be taken to a single battery or a battery bank (it would just treat an inter-connected battery bank like a large battery). If your not sure what you need, or want some advice then please feel free to call us on 01353 663095.
