Hempel (Blakes) Broads Antifouling

This hard scrubbable antifoul provides excellent quality for the money. It is one of the leading antifoul products for the inland waterways, and represents amazing value for those offshore. If you are unsure about any aspect of the paints we offer please feel free to give us a call on 01353 663095 and we will be happy to help.

This particular antifoul is very popular locally and is a best seller for boaters on the inland rivers (especially the Norfolk Broads, Great Ouse, Nene and Middle levels) .

Hempel Broads antifoul is suitable for:

  • Fibreglass steel and wood
  • This product is not suitable for Aluminium (other paints are available)
  • This antifoul is only suitable for fresh water, estuary or salt water
  • Being a hard scrubbable antifoul Waterways plus is suitable for use where the boat may come into contact with the bottom or bank (which many of us do on the rivers and canals)

Temperature Guide:

  • Min Application temnperature = 5 degrees centigrade
  • 10 Degrees centigrade = Touch dry in 8 hours (min overcoat time 9hrs)
  • 20 Degrees centrigrade = Touch dry in 4 hours (min overcoat time 5hrs)

Coverage:

  • 12.8 square metres per litre (32 square metres for a 2.5L tin). Please note that brushing or rolling the product on will result in slightly different coverage. We always reccomend a good coating around the waterline and areas that may get abraded or bashed about a bit.

Colours available:

  • Red Brown (colour ref 50000)
  • True Blue (colour ref 30390)
  • Black (colour ref 19990)
  • Green (on request, not usually stocked) (colur ref 41820)

Hempels Broads antifouling is a medium strength copper based antifouling, for use in fresh and salt waters. Suitable for all substrates except aluminium. For use below the waterline.

Preparation & Application: Ensure all surfaces are clean, oil free and dry. Clean with pre-clean. On a previously coated surface, wet abrade to remove any loose matter and to provide a suitable key. Wash surface with fresh water and allow to dry. Apply 2 coats, with an additional coat around leading edges and other high wear areas.

On substrates that have not previously been antifouled, prime prepared surface with 1 coat of underwater primer, then apply 2 coats of Broads Antifouling.

Carriage is charged at cost and is £11.99 inc VAT for a single tin upwards (for example delivery of two 2.5L tins of antifoul would only cost £11.99 inc VAT within Mainland UK). There is a surcharge for delivery to Highland Scotland or anywhere outside Mainland UK.

Your choice of antifoul will be determined by the following:
Whether you use your boat in salt or fresh water, the maximum speed of your boat, whether the boat is ever on a "drying out berth" or mud mooring.

A self eroding antifoul, as the name suggests erodes over the season as the boat passes through the water. The downside to an eroding antifoul is that abrasion or speed will rub or wash it off.

A polishing antifoul is a product that will erode, but to a lesser extent and so is suitable for faster boats (up to 25 knots). The main characteristic is that the resin is packed with a biocide that discourages fungal and fouling growth. The resin breaks down throughout the season exposing fresh biocide (hence inhibiting / preventing growth), this has the added advantage that you don't end up with layers and layers of old antifoul (antifouling) on the hull.

A hard scrubbable antifoul will resist mild abrasion such as a drying out mooring, bankside mooring in shallows (e.g a muddy river bank & bed) and speeds in excess of 25 knots. The resin is designed to erode very little, but without getting too bogged down in the science of it all the chemical composition of the paint (antifouling) ensures that biocide is continually exposed to the water so that fungal and fouling growth is inhibited / prevented.

  1. If you do not have an existing antifoul, or are unsure what has already been applied, then using a suitable primer will ensure good adhesion to an unpainted surface, or provide a barrier between dissimilar antifouls.
  2. Never dry sand an antifouling paint: if inhaled, the dust is extremely harmful to health.
Make a note of how long the antifouling can be applied prior to immersion (this can vary from days to months).
  3. Apply more antifoul where the hull will receive most wear (from water as well as abrasion), particularly the bow and waterline.
  4. Be aware that temperature of the air, paint and surface being coated will affect drying and overcoating times.
  5. Always read the instructions on the tin of antifoul product prior to use.
