Minn Kota Outboards FAQ

How long will the battery last on a Minn Kota electric outboard?

Print
PDF

It all depends upon how big your battery is, how big the engine is and how fast you are going.

85a/hr Battery = equivalent 85 amp output for 1hour

A battery has an approximate maximum usable capacity of 75% of the stated capacity.

Therefore an 85a/hr battery has a usable capacity of: 85 x 75% = 63.75 a/hrs.

This figure can then be used to approximate how long an electric outboard would run at full throttle on an 85a/hr battery (obviously the battery would last longer at a lower throttle setting)

Minn Kota Classic 28 = 35A max draw

63.75 / 35 = 1.82 hrs

Minn Kota Endura 30 = 30A max draw

63.75 / 30 = 2.13 hrs

Minn Kota Endura 36 = 34A max draw

63.75 / 34 = 1.88 hrs

Minn Kota Endura 46 = 42A max draw

63.75 / 42 = 1.52 hrs

Minn Kota Maxxum T40 = 42A max draw

63.75 / 42 = 1.52 hrs

Note though that the Maxxum will most probably achieve better performance than this because of its increased sophistication.

Minn Kota Riptide 40 = 42A max draw

63.75 / 30 = 1.52 hrs

Minn Kota Riptide 55 = 50A max draw

63.75 / 55 = 1.28 hrs

Please note that the below calculations are approximate and for reference only. Please consult the manufacturers published specifications for official power output figures.

Minn Kota Classic 28                     = 28lbs max thrust / 1.55hp

Minn Kota Endura 30                     = 30lbs max thrust / 1.66hp

Minn Kota Endura 36                     = 36lbs max thrust / 2hp

Minn Kota Endura 46                     = 46lbs max thrust / 2.55hp

Minn Kota Maxxum T40               = 40lbs max thrust / 2.22hp

Minn Kota Riptide 40                     = 40lbs max thrust / 2.22hp

Minn Kota Riptide 55                     = 55lbs max thrust / 3.05hp

Why are the saltwater version Minn Kota motors more expensive?

Print
PDF

Saltwater is more corrosive than fresh, therefore a motor that is to be used in a harsher environment needs to be built to cope with it. The saltwater Minn Kota’s (Riptide) have enhanced shielding on the electrics and corrosion resistance on parts that come into contact with the water, hence the higher price for the enhanced properties and performance.
