How do I know if I need a short shaft or a long shaft engine?

 

 

The shaft length needed is dependant upon the transom height of your boat. The idea is that the engine’s cavitation plate and propeller protrude below the bottom of the boat into free uninterrupted water so it can push water away and hence pull water along the underside of the hull.

Measure from the top of the transom (where the engine sits) to the bottom of the hull (down the centre line, or in-line with where the engine would sit).

Shortshaft = 383 – 433mm (15.1 – 17”)

Longshaft = 513 – 563mm (20.2 – 22.2”)
