Eberspacher Hydronic D5 Narrowboat kit (basic control option).

This kit is a 5kw diesel fired hot water heater suitable for running a wet heating system (radiators and calorifier). The kit contents is suitable for inland use and will satisfy BSS requirements if fitted correctly and in conjunction with the appropriate equipment.

As you will be able to see from other pages on our website we offer a number of heating solutions to suit your needs on the inland waterways, therefore we are in a great position to help advise you which product might best suit your needs. We believe one of the most important things is to think how you want to use the boat and then work backwards to identifty a product that will suit you. We have listed below what we consider to be the main advantages of installing an Eberspacher Hydronic diesel heating system:
  1. The Eberspacher hydronic unit itself is small and unobtrusive allowing you to mount it out of the way (for example the engine bay)
  2. Heating a boat using hot water is an effective way of distributing the heat around a cabin without bias to the appliances location
  3. Be aware that when installing an Eberspacher Hydronic you will need to install radiators to distribute the heat around the cabin
  4. The basic control option allows simple "On / Off", "Up / Down" control of the heat level output from the Hydronic D5
  5. The timer control option allows the heating to be turned on and off automatically (much as you would a heating system at home) on either the Hydronic D4 or D5.
At Ely Boat Chandlers we will spend time helping you to choose the right heating product to suit your needs. We can help you regarding installation questions, radiator sizing questions, boat safety questions and performance questions. Please note that we are not Eberspacher main dealers and as such cannot carry out installation, warranty or repair work on Eberspacher products.

Inland waterways considerations
The most popular boats for these units to be installed in are Narrowboats, this leads to a number of things needing to be considered:
  • Eberspacher heaters (including Eberspacher Hydronic D4 and Eberspacher Hydronic D5) use a top mounted dip pipe fuel take off. Therefore access to the top of the tank is neccessary (side access is possible, please ask for details),
  • All fuel pipe to pass BSS regulations will need to be copper or ISO7840 rated rubber,
  • Exhaust positioning, fuel supply and 12v supply will all be subject to BSS regulations,
  • One of our (Ely Boat Chandlers) members of staff is an independant Boat Safety Scheme examiner and would be happy advise a customer regarding BSS regulations relating to fitment of an Eberspacher Hydronic D4 or Eberspacher Hydronic D5. Fitment of a marine diesel water heater sounds problematic, but if you follow the installation manual provided and take account of BSS regulations it is pretty simplistic compared to many other DIY installations carried out by boatowners.
