What does it do?

The Sterling 160A Alternator to battery charger is designed to be wired inbetween your alternator and batterys. A standard alternator has a pretty basic regulator on it that controls the amount of charge supplied to the batterys, the Sterling AB12160 acts like a very smart regulator and hence improves the charging performance of your alternator. In basic terms the alternator to battery charger controls the output of the alternator to give very similar performance to a big 4 step battery charger, putting as much charge in as it can without causing harm to the battery.

One of the main advantages of the AB12160 over the Sterling Pro Universal advanced digital regulator is that it is wired externally to the alternator. This makes the installation alot easier, you dont have to open up the alternator and solder wires in (this makes it particularly suitable for newer boats who may still have an active warranty on the engine and associated alternator).

The Sterling AB12160 Alternator to battery charger is often used when a boat has more than one alternator, for example a 90A and 50A alternator (the total outputs of both alternators when added must be less than 160A).
